About

Dr S Mwelase

MBChB(UKZN), H Dip Orth(SA), MMed Ortho(UKZN), FcOrth(SA), Spine Fellowship (Stellenbosch)

Dr Sandile Mwelase is a skilled Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in spinal pathology. He recently joined Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg, bringing with him a wealth of experience in both state and academic medicine, as well as a deeply patient-centred approach to care.

Raised in Umlazi, Durban, in a close-knit family of seven, Dr Mwelase had long dreamed of becoming a doctor—a vision nurtured and supported by his parents, who served as powerful role models throughout his journey. After completing his undergraduate medical training at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in 2010, he began his clinical career with an internship at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital and community service at Tongaat Community Health Centre.

Although initially drawn to general surgery, he discovered his true calling in orthopaedics during a post at Stanger Hospital. What began as a pragmatic opportunity quickly revealed itself to be an ideal fit. “Orthopaedics is practical and problem-solving,” he explains. “You see the issue, and in many cases, you’re able to do something meaningful about it.” He was also drawn to the specialty’s longer-term relationships—especially in spinal care, where patients often require extended follow-up and collaborative management.

Dr Mwelase completed his registrar training at Greys Hospital and went on to earn his MMed Ortho (UKZN), Fellowship of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons of South Africa (FCOrth(SA)), and Higher Diploma in Orthopaedics (H Dip Orth(SA)). His desire to deepen his expertise led him to pursue a spine fellowship at Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University, where he focused on degenerative spine disease, trauma, infection, tumours, and minimally invasive techniques.

Now in private practice, Dr Mwelase offers consultation and surgical services from both Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg and Lenmed Howick Private Hospital. He works closely with a wide network of allied health professionals, recognising the importance of multidisciplinary care in achieving optimal patient outcomes. He is known for his thorough and empathetic consultations, often starting with conservative management and progressing step-by-step—with surgery only when necessary. “For me,” he says, “there’s always the potential to improve someone’s quality of life, and that’s an incredibly satisfying part of what I do.”

In addition to spinal conditions such as disc herniation, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and scoliosis, he also treats a range of orthopaedic concerns including shoulder impingement, rotator cuff pathology, and hand and wrist disorders. His surgical interests include both trauma and elective procedures.

Beyond medicine, Dr Mwelase is a devoted husband and father who enjoys exploring the South African outdoors with his family. He values balance, nature, and lifelong learning—whether through continued professional development or the simple joy of discovering a new hiking trail.
